This is a question that always comes up. “Should I be eating fruits?” “Are they what is causing me to gain weight?”
In a previous post I talked about how at any given time something is getting demonized for being the root-problem but over time blame goes to something else. Fruits are no different and unfortunately they are getting blamed quite a bit.
If you were to look at the nutritional information on fruits you would naturally see more sugars than most vegetables and protein. Most people draw the conclusion from this that they are bad.
This is an incomplete picture though. Foods are NOT just fuel, they cannot just be seen as “x” amount of calories or ‘x’ amount of sugars. They do so much more. They literally impact organs, disease, metabolism in so many ways that a simple nutrition label cannot express!
Fruits Have Been Found To Reduce...
Seems like a common problem that people have these days is keeping their weight loss motivation. I’m going to let you in on two big secrets that will keep this flame going as long as you want!
Because think about if you can’t keep yourself motivated then when a bad day hits you, it’s much more likely to derail you, isn’t it? It is much easier to just give up then.
But also, if you are motivated to do something how much more effort are you willing to put into that activity? Probably a whole lot more right? It becomes so much easier. It’s no longer something we have to constantly “push” ourselves to doing.
Here’s the sad thing about motivation: I read this in a magazine in a doctors office and it literally jolted me because of how true it was:
“Most People Wait for Motivation to Strike Them Like Lightning”
The problem here is how often does that happen? Think about it, how many days are you just beyond ecstatic about working out or anything else?
For most people it’s not very often… If we wait for motivation to hit us to go to the gym or eat healthy, we aren’t going to make much progress. It just doesn’t happen consistently enough. Instead we need to create it:
Tip #1: “Act Yourself Into A Way Of Feeling.”
So what does that mean? It means you get moving and get started. You are more likely to act yourself into “motivation” than you are to feel yourself into a way of acting.
In simpler terms: you are more likely to get motivation through doing the activity than by waiting for motivation in the first place.
So instead of waiting for the “motivational spark” each day to go to the gym, commit yourself to going to the gym for 5 minutes. That’s it! Only five minutes! If you spend five minutes and you still don’t feel like working out then you can leave.
But guess what? Almost always you will keep working out for full hour. Because simply doing the activity often times gets us motivated to complete the workout.
And over time it gets easier and easier until it’s a habit.
Tip #2: Remember Your Reasons
Behind any great accomplishment were powerful reasons. It was the reasons that fueled the person to do whatever it took to reach their goal.
Think about what got you started in the first place. What was it that sparked you to want to lose weight or make whatever change you are pursuing?
Was it something someone said?
Was it something you saw?
Was it a feeling you had after trying on a certain outfit?
Was it thinking about the impact your habits are having on your kids?
I don’t know what it was for you but take a moment to think about what it was. Really bring yourself back there and embrace whatever moment it was. Now write it down.
Remember this: Everyone is motivated by something, the question is what?
Whatever this event was that “pushed you over the edge” use it as fuel. Use it as something to push you even when it’s hard. There are certain things that ignite such a fire inside of us that it’s nearly impossible not to get moved by it.
Remind yourself of that moment whenever you need that extra drive or extra push. It is truly a gift.
“People often say motivation doesn’t last. Well neither does bathing - that’s why we recommend it daily.” – Zig Ziglar
I don’t know what your struggle is right now. I don’t know if things are great for you or if you are facing a hard time. All I know is that if you have not already, you are going to face a moment where every resource you have is tested.
Maybe you are overcoming an adversity, have hit a plateau in your weight loss, or some other goal and now you’re discouraged. Possibly beginning to doubt yourself. If it hasn’t happened yet... it probably will at some point.
While these moments can be some of toughest times of our life, they bring us to a decision. They bring us to a fork in the road. A decision about what this means and what we’re going to do. You can decide that this is too tough, too painful, and settle with giving up. You are better than that though. There’s a better option...
You Can Decide That It’s Time for Round Two! It’s Time to Keep Pushing Through! It’s Time to Get Back Up!
“Don’t cry to quit… cry to keep going!” - Eric Thomas
That’s what we have to do! You don’t have to hold in that frustration and disappointment. Whatever emotion you are feeling don’t let it stop you, let it fuel you. Let it ignite into an internal drive! A drive to see this thing to completion. Let it ignite the passion and fire inside you to take whatever action you need to reach that goal.
And know that you are not alone. Think about all major successes. They all encountered this tough time too where they didn’t know if they could do it. They were frustrated, upset, and disappointed. They were beat up from each failure. They were tired. You know what the difference was though?
They kept fighting! They knew exactly what they wanted and exactly what they were going to accomplish.
And They Knew That With Each Failure
They Were One Step Closer To Success!
One step closer to accomplishing their goal.
Recognize that this pain, this adversity, it is just part of the process. It’s the step right before greatness.
“Everything looks like a failure from the middle” -Kanter
Now imagine how great you are going to feel when you get there. I don’t care what it is. Take a second to really embrace that feeling of accomplishment… of triumph… of satisfaction… of happiness. If you keep pushing you will get it… it’s only a matter of time.
“Remember, it's always the last key on the key ring that opens the door.” - Paulo Cuelo
Now get out there and do something today to get you closer! Go on that workout that you have been putting off, clean out your refrigerator, tell that person how you feel, go buy that book, enroll in that class, whatever it is. Use this message as your excuse to get moving again.
“If you fall, fall on your back. If you can look up, you can get up.” - Les Brown
I believe in you. I know that you are capable of great things. You really have so much potential, more than you give yourself credit for. Know that you will be able to look back on this moment and appreciate how this hard time made you stronger. It made you more of a man or woman.
